Inspired as a comment on the split of the Czechoslovakian state into the Czech and Slovak Republics at the end of 1992.
The Republics now have a non-communist system with governments whose policy has moved towards a market economy and membership in the European Union.
I collect Czech glass from the early 1920's for it's craftsmanship and beauty... but wondered how to comment on the split with old ties and, possibly, the loss of the identity the pieces exude, as no other Country produces the same look or feel in their offerings...
As you study the painting, notice the use of twos; two levels of surface, double stripes, the opposing sheen of glass set against textile, even the frame denotes the split with it's two molded textures.
I chose to unify these by finishing the surface off in a coat of black ~ an attempt to hold the fragile nature of the subject matter together, given the intrusion of politics, with a congruent salute to the death of State.
