This oil on mahogany is very popular!
From a contemporary suite of thematic works featuring monkeys in human situations following illustrator C. M. Coolidge's lead in his "Dogs Playing Poker" series for advertising firm Brown & Bigelow in 1903.
IDeology is a contemplative portrait.
In his cigar-smoking bravado, the monkey presents the raw male drive, flaunting mainstream conceptions of what is overtly male ~ an obsession with sports stats and puffing on a fine stogie.
However here, he exhales a sinuous line of smoke which moves up to cradle and caress the female timepiece ~ a symbol for creativity ~ inviting the brave to step out of the ordinary and engage in a dance with their own unconscious, inventive side.

The Baroque frame dates to c.1864
